Self/Dharma Refuge: Two Islands

1.「諸法(dharma: form/phenomena/truth/ethic)の法(Dharma: Norm/Law/Truth/Ethic)」は縁起、即ち、一切現象は無量の原因と条件により因縁生起するということです。

Take refuge in yourself and the Dharma: Two Refuges

The Buddha was awakened in the Dharma (Norm/Law/Ethic) of all dharmas (forms/phenomena/truths), Dependent Co-origination, that is, all phenomena are dependently co-originated on limitless causes and conditions. This means that all are related and relative, i.e., nothing is separate and absolute.

He said, “Take refuge in yourself, not others. Take refuge in the Dharma, not others.” One can take refuge in oneself and must be responsible for oneself. Eventually and essentially, we can take refuge in the Dharma (Universal Truth/Ethic) and must be responsible for it.

He achieved his awakening in the Dharma and advised us to take refuge in the Two Refuges of self and Dharma by stilling karma in nirvana and awakening to the Dharma. He showed that one can still the triple poisons of desire, divisiveness, and delusion by the triple learnings of morality, concentration, and prognosis.

Anyone can attain the five blisses of awakening, freedom, equality, friendship, and peace in oneself and with others, individually, socially, and ecologically in the Dharma world, becoming the Dharma body, enjoying limitless life and light, and the four limitlessnesses of friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

September 29, 2023 C.E.

Notes:

  1. “The Dharma (Norm/Law/Truth/Ethic) of all dharmas (forms/phenomena/ truths/ethics)” is Dependent Co-origination, i.e., all phenomena are interdependently co-originated on limitless causes and conditions. This means that we are interrelated with other beings (other species, elements, stars, etc.), and relatives to each other, and that we must therefore live together harmoniously and strive to make a wholly wholesome world to become harmonious, health, and happy.

  1. Dharma means 1. form (from d-harm: phenomenon) and 2. norm (from d-h-arm: norm: law operating through phenomena: ethic), and 3. the teaching of the law of all phenomena, that is, Dependent Co-origination (originally awakened on the origination of perception/consciousness depending on the sense organs and objects, but later applied to all phenomena, cf. note 1). This law is similar to the law of causality, now used by sciences, but deeper and wider, applied beyond objects – more on subjects and symbols – ideas, etc.).

  1. The twelve-limbed Dependent Co-origination (bhava-cakka/bhava-cakra, becoming wheel) is the most well-known representative application of the Dharma of Dependent Co-origination, though it is misinterpreted due to its linear presentation by oral tradition and the Hindu idea of transmigration (an embryogenetical interpretation called two causalities in three generations). Actually, it is a compound formed from the Dependent Co-origination of consciousness on sense organs and objects, of suffering on craving, and of samsara (total flow: moment-to-moment change, not like transmigration in Hinduism) on appropriation. It illustrates how our life goes with the five aggregates (originally identifying and analyzing so-called “self,” later “world”), resulting in suffering due to the triple poisons.

  1. The Indra-net, whose crystal balls on its knots reflect each other mutually and limitlessly in space and time, illustrates the Dharma of Dependent Co-origination well, showing that all phenomena are interdependently co-originated and co-originating among themselves. One (person or thing) is interconnected with others (persons or things) by elements (air, water, light, magnetism, chemicals, particles, sounds, colors, etc.), molecules, microorganisms, communications (words, arts, media, internet, etc.), actions (of viruses, plants, animals, humans, stars, etc.), etc. inside and outside, in space and time limitlessly.

  1. Dogen said, “Loving effectively words have the power to turn the heavens.” Words, actions, machines, nukes, the weather, earthquakes, etc., can change the world, planet, etc., and can make ripple effects limitlessly in space and time. Dreams, dictatorships, isms, ideologies, lifestyles, living beings, natural events, etc., can change communities, countries, species, planets, histories, etc., as we observe every day throughout the world.

  1. Our outlooks, instincts, insights, actions, attitudes, etc., can change ourselves and others inwardly and outwardly, hierarchically and historically. The triple learnings can change the triple poisons to provide prognoses on our problems. Moralities can make our globe more moral and ethical with the Global Ethic. Concentration can conduce oneself into a good dharma body, mouth, mind and consummate into the cosmic body, Dharma body, in limitless life, light, liberation, and love.

  1. The solution of the global problematique, interrelated global problems, requires the global ethic (issued by the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1993 with more than seven thousand people from all religions and from all over the world attending), which is based on the Five Precepts (and the fundamental common elements in the Ten Precepts, the Ten Commandments, etc.).

  1. To reunite with the holiness of the limitless ocean of life from being a separated small bubble or foam of ego or group ego is the goal of anyone or a universal religion, where one lives as a true friend in need of all, as expressed in Mitra, Mithra, Metteya, Maitreya, Mazda, Massiah, etc., and who lives in limitless life, light, liberation, and love.

  1. A paradigm shift from our artificial, unilateral pyramidal civilization to a natural, cyclical Indra-net life culture for sharing life, heart, and harmony with the five blisses (awakening, freedom, equality, friendship, and peace) is essential to solve the global problematique. Culture is the cultivation of our potential in truth, goodness, beauty, and holiness (cf. sciences, philosophies, arts, and religions).

From Ego to Eco: Dharma of all dharmas

3.  「諸法(dharma: form/phenomena/truth/ethic)の法(Dharma: Norm/Law/Truth/Ethic)」は縁起、即ち、一切現象は無量の原因と条件により因縁生起するということです。

From Ego to Eco: Dharma of all dharmas

The Buddha was awakened to the Dharma (Norm/Law/Ethic) of all dharmas (forms/phenomena/truths), i.e., Dependent Co-origination, that all phenomena are interdependently co-originated on limitless causes and conditions in space and time. This means that there is no self-same (separate/eternal), self-sovereign (independent/absolute), self-substance (Ātman/Absolute, etc.). It is irrational to imagine that an absolute, separate, sovereign being controls our phenomenal world. If this were the case, there would be no relationship between them.

The Buddha decided to come out into the world to save it from destruction by selfishness, this fundamental delusion becoming the triple poisons, now causing the critical global problematique with nuclear holocaust, dictatorships, discrimination, nationalism, wars, mass extinction, etc. All problems and sufferings come from karma, (whose) source of surviving strife, which is ego (I, mine, my group, etc.) sacrificing eco (life, life system, etc.), embraces and enables egoes.

The solution lies in a paradigm shift from ego to eco, karma to Dharma, civilization (urbanization) to culture (cultivation), etc. We must see the truth of the global system and observe the global ethic, clarifying how an artificial, uni-directional pyramidal civilization affects the global eco system, and then change it to a natural, cyclical life Indra-net culture to provide holy (wholly wholesome) harmony, health, and happiness for all in space and time according to the Dharma.

The concrete way is in stilling karma (which causes the triple poisons), settling in nirvana (no wind, of karma), seeing the Dharma, sharing, serving, and saving all in coexistence and cooperation as true friends in need. More concretely it is to practice still sitting, seeing the world (ego/eco in the Dharma world), sharing prognoses (four holy truths and eight holy ways), and saving the world as a whole to make it in harmony, health, and happiness, avoiding sectional, sick selfishness.

September 22, 2023 C.E.

  1. Dharma means 1. form (from d-harm: phenomenon) and 2. norm (from d-h-arm: norm: law operating through phenomena: ethic), and 3. the teaching of the law of all phenomena, that is, Dependent Co-origination (originally awakened on the origination of perception/consciousness depending on the sense organs and objects, but later applied to all phenomena, cf. note 4). This law is similar to the law of causality, now used by sciences, but deeper and wider, applied beyond objects – more on subjects and symbols – ideas, etc.).
  1. The Indra-net, whose crystal balls on its knots reflect each other mutually and limitlessly in space and time, illustrates the Dharma of Dependent Co-origination well, showing that all phenomena are interdependently co-originated and co-originating among themselves.

Please refer to part 3 of “Why Buddhism Now?” for a detailed explanation with the structural system of the “Becoming Wheel” (bhava cakka/cakra):

https://buddhism869196463.wordpress.com/%e3%83%9b%e3%83%bc%e3%83%a0%ef%bc%9ahome/

  1. The life system is in a limitlessly interdependent and interrelated system throughout limitless space and time. If we can acknowledge and activate it, we can function as limitless life, light, liberation, and love, like the crystal balls of the Indra-net, making it holy (wholly wholesome), harmonious, healthy, and happy, calm and clear, collectively and continuously.
  1. Sitting still makes one calm and clear, as a bowl settling down makes the water inside of it become calm and clear, reflecting the world. Constant cultivation of still sitting leads to calming (samatha/śamatha) and observation (vipassanā/vipaśyanā), nirvana and awakening (bodhi), witnessing the of truth world (Dhamma/Dharma-dhātu), and becoming the truth body (Dhamma/Dharma-kāya).
  1. The key practice of sitting still is to still karma, settle in nirvana (nir-vāṇa = ni-vāta: no-wind, of karma), and see the Dharma, serving and saving all. The Four Limitlessnesses (Brahma-abodes) are friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity (upekkhā/upekṣā, lit. throwing away, the triple poisons).
  1. The practice of zen (jhāna/dhyāna: meditation), the key and core practice of za-zen, sitting meditation, is to still karma, settle in nirvana, see the Dharma, and serve and save all. This process is categorized in the Four Zen Stages and the Eight Concentration (samādhi) Stages (actually Four Zen Stages plus Four Concentration Stages combined, going together).
  1. Za-zen (sitting meditation) orders and stills body, breath, and brain (bodily, verbal, and mental) karmas. The Four Zen Stages illustrate the stilling process of mental (intellectual, emotional, and volitional) karmas, stilling contemplation/investigation, joy, and comfort, resulting in the reaching of equanimity (upekhā/upekṣā, lit. discarding), nirvana.

Please refer to parts 4 (nirvana) and 5 (zen) of “Why Buddhism Now”:

https://buddhism869196463.wordpress.com/%e3%83%9b%e3%83%bc%e3%83%a0%ef%bc%9ahome/

  1. Samādhi is essential to go beyond karma (especially its Triple Poisons of desire, divisiveness, and delusion) and settle in nirvana (by sitting still, stilling karma, settling in nirvana, seeing the Dharma/dharmas/Dharma world, and serving and saving all), in which true meditation and its prognosis (paññā/prajñā) can function.
  1. Ernst Cassirer defined humans as homo symbolicum in his Philosophy of Symbolism, its summary An Essay on Man, where humans are described as skillful in handling the symbolisms of language, myth, religion, art, science, history, etc. The Myth of the State is an important work that to shows how states operate and how people are misled to wars and even nuclear demise.
  1. Religion derives from Latin religare (reunion). Religion is, thus, to reunite with holiness (wholly wholesomeness, cf. Rudolf Otto’s definition of religion as the Holy) from sin (=separation, separated sick, cf. a-sun-der, sundry).
  1. A paradigm shift from our artificial, unilateral pyramidal civilization ( = urbanization, from Latin civitas: city) to a natural, cyclical Indra-net life culture ( = cultivation, originally of land, then one’s potential) for sharing life, heart, and harmony with the five blisses (awakening, freedom, equality, friendship, and peace) is essential to solve the global problematique. Culture is the cultivation of our potential in truth, goodness, beauty, and holiness (cf. sciences, philosophies, arts, and religions).

Awaken and Act: Four Zen Stages

3.「諸法(dharma: form/phenomena/truth/ethic)の法(Dharma: Norm/Law/Truth/Ethic)」は縁起、即ち、一切現象は無量の原因と条件により因縁生起するということです。

Awaken and Act: Four Meditations

We have the inevitable and common individual sufferings of sickness, aging, death, etc., social sufferings such as discrimination, destruction, etc., and global problems like global warming, mass extinction, war, and nukes, which may grow into a global extinction. Most people are too occupied or oppressed by individual sufferings to be able to see how social and global ones threaten our future.

All sufferings and problems come from our karmic triple poisons of desire, divisiveness, and the delusion of self, set in self-survival strife. Karma (action, habit, heredity), created by physical, verbal, and mental actions, grows and create individual, social, and global forms as a network of crystal balls on its knots of the Indra-net, reflecting each other in space and time.

The solution to suffering lies in stilling karma in still sitting, settling in nirvana, and seeing the Dharma (Norm/Law) of all dharmas (forms/phenomena), i.e., Dependent Co-origination, sharing awakening and action related to it, serving and saving all. Nirvana means no-wind (of karma) attained in the Four Zen (meditation) stages, thus the stilling of physical, verbal, and mental karma.

The witness of nirvana reveals the state of no karma – no action or appropriation, no becoming separated, sick, suffering, sovereign, self, Self, soul, etc. Our constantly becoming hungry, angry, attached, divisive, deluded, dissatisfied, devilish, etc., is due to dependent co-origination of our body, mouth, mind, and the world. The long night of nescience is awakened by nirvana.

Notes:

  1. We have the four inevitable sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and also eight, adding to these the four common ones of parting with the beloved, meeting with the hated, not attaining the desired, and, in short, the sufferings that arise from the five aggregates of form, feeling, idea, formation, and consciousness. Now we are endangered by nuclear holocaust and demise of the global life system, even by a single man-made decision.
  1. The Indra-net, whose crystal balls on its knots reflect each other mutually and limitlessly in space and time, illustrates the Dharma of Dependent Co-origination well, showing that all phenomena are interdependently co-originated and co-originating among themselves.

Please refer to part 3 of “Why Buddhism Now?” for a detailed explanation with the structural system of the “Becoming Wheel” (bhava cakka/cakra):

ホーム:HOME

ホーム:HOME

No Belittling A Little

No belittling of a little: Four Dedications

King Pasenadi of Kosala visited the Buddha at Jetavana Monastery in the suburbs of Savatthi, the capital city, and asked, “Do you say, ‘I’ve attained unsurpassed complete right awakening?’ The Buddha said, “Yes.” The king said, “There are many renowned teachers with many followers. Even they don’t claim that, and you are still young and it is not so long after your renunciation.” The Buddha said, “You should not belittle such a one as fire, serpent … even if it is young.”

The Buddha recommended that we decrease and destroy bad karma (action, habit, heredity) and start and strengthen good karma, which are called the four applications. If we allow bad karma, even if it is young or small, it will grow older and bigger, causing more and greater casualties and calamities in time and space. If we start and strengthen good karma, even if it is young or small, it will grow mature and multiply, creating greater goodness and gratitude in space and time.

One’s karmic Triple Poisons of desire, divisiveness, and delusion can grow nation-wide and on a global scale just as nukes, creating radiation, cause sickness throughout the world, can eventually terminate all life forms with accidental, accumulated radiation or all-round nuclear war and winter. Our global problematique of climate change, mass extinction, war, waste, etc., are nothing but the accumulated causes of our habitual, unnoticed, and unchanged small actions.

“Many a mickle makes a muckle.” The Dharma of all dharmas, Interdependent Co-origination, i.e., that all phenomena are interdependently co-originated on limitless causes and conditions, affects limitlessly beyond individual, society, ecology, etc. Radiation has no safe limit, but nuke advocates (nuclear power plants or bombs) decide limits short sightedly without long-range responsibilities, allowing radiation to be spewed into the air, land, and water all over the world for millions of years.

Notes:

  1. The Infant Scripture (Dahara Sutta: Samyutta Nikaya1), etc. tells the story (the above translation is an abridged one).
  1. The Four Dedications (cattāro samma-padhāna: 四正勤) is the Four Applications (totally applying oneself to) these four ways. The Sanskritization prahāna: discarding, and its Chinese translation 正断are mistaken, which only express the half of the four and the rest are ignored (starting and strengthening). The correct translation is pradhāna (正勤).
  1. Disastrous nuclear power plant accidents (Chernobyl in 1986, Fukushima in 2011, Three Mile Island in 1979) produced millions of people dislocated from radiation contaminated areas or still living in hot spots, over a million of people physically and mentally affected with cancer, etc. Unknown numbers of people will still develop diseases such as thyroid cancer, etc., and people in hundreds of nations continue to be affected through their living, jobs, etc. The statistics are widely different depending on whether they have been produced by those in favor of or against nukes. Much less has been written about the total consequences of radiation, its effects, etc.

Fukushima disaster:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima_nuclear_disaster

Three Mile Island disaster:

  1. The global problematique means interrelated global problems such as climate change, mass extinction of species, nukes, wars, waste, water/earth/ air pollution, starvation, discrimination, development, destruction, etc.
  1. Nuclear fission (nuclear bomb or power plant) is made by men, not nature, and is fatal to life and even to the total global life system. It is only possible by using a staggering amount of resources (human, national, natural, etc.), sacrificing the conversion of them to natural systems (life, ecology, economy in a safe system). Nuclear power plants are susceptible to accidents, terrorism, natural disasters, and war, and they are used to make nuclear bombs (inevitably producing plutonium, the deadliest nuclear particle used for nuclear bombs), giving no limits or responsibilities to stop and solve problems such as unauthorized and unsafe storage of radioactive material (such as plutonium – Japan has stored enough to make 4,000 nuclear bombs of the kind dropped on Nagasaki – spent fuels) in the geosphere for hundreds of thousand years, especially when accidents and disasters happen. The merits of nuclear power are groundless (carbon dioxide emissions must be calculated throughout the entire process of searching for materials, mining, transporting, and processing them, etc., not only of electricity generation. The system is economically unpayable and ecologically endless in time for decommissioning in case of meltdown; uranium resources are less than coal, of course incomparable with renewable energy sources which are limitless and safest, etc.).

           https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power

  1. The global life system is endangered by tens of thousands of stockpiles of nuclear weapons under the control of one man or just a few, the release of nuclear radiation, and the ever-increasing stockpiles of radioactive nuclear waste that must be stored safely, constantly and continuously.
  1. Mankind with all species are entangled in the endless dilemma of nuclear bombs and nuclear reactors (called a peaceful use of nuclear power, but coming from the inevitable process of enriching uranium, producing plutonium, and producing nuclear bombs), which power politicians, military men, money mongers, et al. (called military-industry complex, nuclear village, nuclear mafia, etc.), want to make their might, money, and matter with the endless rhetoric of nuclear bomb deterrence and nuclear power development, which engulfs everyone in endless fear for ecological, social, and individual problems, and even planetary catastrophe. If only humans become awakened from these deadly delusions by deceptions and demagogies, they can be freed from endless fear from nukes, wars, waste, and worldwide collapse.

Embracing All: Four Embracing Dharmas

Embracing All: Four Embracing Dharmas

The Buddha said that our life and awakening are rare and precious, like a blind turtle living at the bottom of ocean coming up to its surface once in a hundred years and happening to fit its head into the hole of a floating log. Every living being values its life more than anything and wants to make it the best life. Every living being must, however, die in an instant, compared to the limitless time of the universe, like a dewdrop on a leaf in the morning sun.

How, then, can we make our life the best possible life? The Buddha was awakened to the fact that all living beings are karma-born, -heirs, -owners, -machines, -refuged, bound by the karmic Triple Poisons, but can be freed from them by taking refuge in good karma, avoiding bad karma, eventually being awakened from the long night of nescience, realizing nirvana and prognosis. We can make our life and others’ best in holy harmony, health, and happiness.

He advised the concrete good karma of the Four Embracing Matters of donation, loving words, beneficial action, and sameness, which go beyond the short-sighted, small selfishness of the Triple Poisons or the Triple Only, making oneself and others holy harmony, health, and happiness. Donation is the first step to go beyond short-sighted, small selfishness, and loving speech, beneficial action, and sameness make the world holy (wholly wholesome).

Religion is the reunion with holiness (wholly wholesomeness), but its perspective and practice has been limited by tribalism, racism, nationalism, etc., becoming tribal religion, etc.  The global age requires global ken and kinetic to make the Global Ethic a foundation for them. The Buddha was awakened to the Dharma of all, embracing all, becoming the Dharma body to make himself in sameness with the world, making a universal religion.

September 1, 2023 C.E.

Notes:

  1. Nescience (avijjā/avidyā) means no witness of nirvana (no wind, of karma) and the world in it (cf. Latin video) due to our being karma-machines, like a mouse continuously running on a treadwheel, not stopping to sit still, settle in nirvana, and see the Dharma, serving and saving all.
  1. The Dharma (Norm/Law) of all dharmas (forms/phenomena) is Dependent Co-origination, i.e., all phenomena are interdependently originated on limitless causes and conditions (similar to the Law of Causality, but deeper and wider).
  1. The Triple Poisons are desire, divisiveness, and delusion (of a self-same, self-sovereign self). The “Triple Only” are only me, only now, and only money (short-sighted views and actions, which make the wider world worse).
  1. The Four Embracing Matters/Dharmas (cattāri saṅgaha-vatthūni) are donation (dāna), loving words (piya-vācā), beneficial action (attha-cariyā), and sameness (samāna-atta-tā, lit. same-self-ness).
  1. Donation (dāna) can be material or immaterial (wealth or Dharma), so anyone without wealth can donate one’s kind eyes, harmonious face, loving words, helping body, sympathetic heart, seat, and shelter (called the Seven Donations without wealth).
  1. Sameness (samānāttatā) is to put oneself in another’s position, working with others in the same situations. If one can put oneself with the whole world, being the same with it, one can be truly holy (wholly wholesome with the world), like the Buddha in the Dharma-body (Dharma-kāya), Dharma-nature (Dharmatā), Dharma-thusness (Dharma-tathatā), and Dharma-world (Dharma-dhātu).
  1. The solution of the global problematique requires the global ethic (issued by the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1993 with more than seven thousand people from all religions and from all over the world attending), which is based on the Five Precepts (and the fundamental common elements in the Ten Precepts, the Ten Commandments, etc.).

8.  Religion derives from Latin religare (reunion). Religion is, thus, to reunite with holiness                  (wholly wholesomeness, cf. Rudolf Otto’s definition of religion as the Holy) from sin                      (=separation, separated sick, cf. a-sun-der, sundry).
